$16.3B Pension Fund Boosts Bitcoin Exposure

A $16.3 billion U.S. pension fund has increased its exposure to Bitcoin through a larger investment in Strategy, the business intelligence firm widely known for building the world’s largest corporate Bitcoin treasury.

The Louisiana State Employees’ Retirement System has boosted its holdings of Strategy’s stock (MSTR) to 21,300 shares, representing a position worth approximately $2.13 million, according to data shared by BitcoinTreasuries.NET.

The move marks another step in the growing trend of institutional investors gaining indirect exposure to Bitcoin through companies that hold the cryptocurrency on their balance sheets.

Initial Bitcoin bet

The Louisiana retirement fund first entered the Strategy position earlier, purchasing shares of the company as part of its investment portfolio. The latest increase indicates that the fund has chosen to expand its exposure rather than exit the position as Strategy continues its aggressive Bitcoin accumulation strategy.

By investing in Strategy rather than directly purchasing Bitcoin, the pension fund gains exposure to the cryptocurrency market through a publicly traded company whose stock performance is closely tied to its Bitcoin holdings.

Strategy, led by Executive Chairman Michael Saylor, has transformed itself into a Bitcoin-focused treasury company, using capital raises and debt offerings to acquire more BTC. The company remains one of the largest corporate holders of Bitcoin globally.

Institutional Bitcoin adoption

The Louisiana pension fund’s move shows how Bitcoin exposure is gradually entering traditional investment portfolios, including those managing retirement assets for government employees.

Many pension funds have historically avoided direct cryptocurrency investments due to volatility concerns, but some have begun exploring indirect exposure through publicly traded companies, exchange-traded products, and digital asset-related investments.

The Strategy investment allows the retirement system to participate in Bitcoin’s potential upside without directly holding the cryptocurrency or managing custody issues.
