Bitfinex Showcases Bitcoin‑Native Infrastructure With Ark’s First Live Implementations

On July 24, 2026 by voice

  • Bitfinex covered Ark in 2023 as an unimplemented proposal; today two operational versions, Arkade and Bark, run on the Bitcoin mainnet.
  • Ark Labs raised $5.2 million in March 2026 with backing from Tether, Ego Death Capital, Epoch VC, and Anchorage Digital.
  • Hodl Hodl, Bitrefill, and Lendasat already integrate Arkade to provide payments, swaps, and escrow, consolidating a real commercial offering.

Three years after Bitfinex covered Ark as an unimplemented proposal, the architecture is no longer mere theory. Arkade, developed by Ark Labs, and Bark, developed by Second, operate today on the Bitcoin mainnet and have several commercial integrations. What in 2023 raised questions about its technical viability now has compelling answers in production.

The starting point of the original design was solving persistent problems in self-custodial payments: the need to open Lightning channels, manage inbound liquidity, and keep nodes online at all times. Ark addressed this through virtual transaction outputs, or VTXOs: pre-signed, off-chain Bitcoin outputs backed by funds committed in a single on-chain transaction.

Each VTXO includes a unilateral exit path that allows its holder to recover the underlying bitcoin if the service provider stops operating or refuses to cooperate. This distinction is central: users do not hold a balance controlled by a third party, but outputs with built-in exit guarantees.

.@ArkLabsHQ and @secondhq have implementations of Ark live on Bitcoin mainnet. @lightning’s Wavelength toolkit uses a similar design.

A protocol once thought to need changes to Bitcoin itself now runs entirely on existing primitives.https://t.co/oX1PqkcNXB

Arkade and Bark: Two Paths on the Same Foundation

The two implementations share the same architecture but aim in different directions. Bark prioritizes self-custodial bitcoin payments and interoperability with Lightning Network. Arkade extends the VTXO model toward a more general execution environment, with support for fungible assets such as stablecoins, swaps, and programmable transaction flows.

Arkade Assets, introduced in October 2025, extends the VTXO structure to support assets that move within the same off-chain execution environment, where Bitcoin serves as the final settlement layer. In November 2025, Lendasat —now Satora— launched Lendaswap, a non-custodial swap product that uses Arkade to provide swaps between bitcoin and stablecoins on other chains. In May 2026, Hodl Hodl integrated Arkade into its escrow system to accelerate trade settlement. A month later, Bitrefill incorporated it as a payment option on its gift card platform, with instant, fee-free purchases.

Ark Labs Strengthens Its Position in Bitcoin Infrastructure

Commercial interest also translated into capital. In March 2026, Ark Labs closed a $5.2 million round led by Tether, with participation from Ego Death Capital, Epoch VC, and Anchorage Digital. That same month, the V-PACK proposal established a neutral format for verifying and backing VTXOs across different implementations.

In July 2026, the emergence of Wavelength, the alpha-stage toolkit from Lightning Labs built on a settlement layer similar to Ark for agentic payments, confirmed that the design could attract industry attention beyond the teams that built the original implementations.

Ark did not evolve into a single network. Interoperability between different providers is not a requirement of the architecture, which allows each implementation to advance independently. Payments between users of different implementations can be routed through Lightning. This pattern replicates what already occurs with Lightning, Liquid, Spark, and BitVM: specialized extensions that preserve Bitcoin’s role as the final settlement layer without modifying its consensus rules.
