Indian Markets Rise Despite Iran Risk—What Happens to Indian Bitcoin Returns if Oil and the Rupee Move Next?

On August 24, 2026 by voice

Indian markets opened slightly higher on Monday, with Nifty and Sensex posting marginal gains. The rupee also rose by 7 paise to 95.64 against the US dollar. This positive sentiment comes despite growing concerns over the possible impact of the new US sanctions on Iran.

However, India’s Bitcoin investors could feel the pressure to a greater extent. This is because any potential rise in oil prices could put further pressure on the rupee, indirectly affecting their Bitcoin returns in INR.

Indian Markets Open Higher Despite Iran Sanctions Concerns

Today’s Reuters report revealed that the Indian markets started the week on a positive note after two straight weeks of losses. The Nifty 50 recorded a 0.14% surge to 24,285.05, while the Sensex surged to 77,629.56, with a 0.11% uptick. These increases, though marginal, are reassuring as they come amid rising concerns ahead of the expected US sanctions on Iran, which US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent calls “the toughest sanctions in history.”

The broader Indian market also has reflected this positive sentiment. Most sectors opened today in a positive sphere, with 13 out of the 16 major sectors posting gains. Small-cap and mid-cap stocks rose by around 0.2%.

How Iran Sanctions Could Impact Rupee and Bitcoin

Although the initial reaction in the Indian markets remains positive, the real consequences could only be seen after the Iran sanctions. Investors are now closely watching the possible impacts of the move on oil prices. Any rise in crude oil prices could be critical for Indian Bitcoin investors.

Rising oil prices can push the cost of imports higher, potentially impacting the rupee and inflation rates. Higher inflation could also affect expectations around the RBI’s interest rates and overall market sentiment. If the rupee continues to fall further, it could significantly impact Indian Bitcoin investors. Although $BTC is priced globally in USD, Indians usually track it in INR. So, if the currency weakens, the INR value of the crypto could still rise even if $BTC stays flat in dollar terms.

What Happens to Bitcoin Returns If INR Weakens?

Interestingly, a weaker rupee does not necessarily mean lower returns for Indian investors, although it appears so. It is better to say that the value of the rupee could make a major difference to what investors expected and what they finally receive when they cash out their Bitcoin.

For example, if $BTC is trading at the current $77k range, its value will be around ₹73.61 lakh in INR as per the current USD/INR rate of ₹95.72. Again, if the rupee weakens to ₹100 per dollar, the same $BTC would be worth ₹77 lakh even when the crypto is hovering around $77k. This means that the investor could see a higher INR value even without any actual gains.
