Yen Strength and Rising JGB Yields Signal Risk of Global Carry Trade Unwind

Japan’s bond market is flashing an early warning for global markets, and it’s showing up first in USD/JPY. As the yen strengthens and Japanese government bond (JGB) yields rise, the conditions that once supported global carry trades are starting to reverse.
That shift matters because the yen has long been used to fund positions in higher-yielding assets abroad. If USD/JPY continues to fall while JGB yields climb, the economics behind those trades weaken, increasing the risk of a broader unwind.
USD/JPY Becomes the First Warning Signal
The yen has strengthened to around ¥154 per dollar, gaining roughly 4% in recent sessions. This move makes USD/JPY a key real-time signal for market stress.
A stronger yen raises the cost of repaying yen-funded positions, while falling USD/JPY reduces the profitability of carry trades. When this happens alongside rising Japanese yields, the pressure on leveraged positions builds quickly, making USD/JPY an early indicator of potential unwinds before they show up in equities or crypto.
JGB Yields Show Whether the Pressure Is Building
Japan’s 10-year government bond yield has reached 3% for the first time since 1996. The 30-year yield traded around 4.18% in early September. This move signals that tightening financial conditions are extending across the curve.
The key signal is not a single yield level. A sustained rise in JGB yields alongside a stronger yen would make Japanese assets highly competitive with overseas holdings. That shift could encourage institutional investors to repatriate capital, reinforcing yen strength and increasing pressure on global carry trades.
Nasdaq and Bitcoin Could Reveal the Liquidity Impact
The next confirmation would come from global risk assets. The 2024 yen carry-trade unwind coincided with a global selloff. Bitcoin fell about 11% in dollar terms during the August move, while the Nasdaq also declined as markets reduced leveraged positions.
Gold may react differently. Liquidity shocks can initially create selling across liquid assets before safe-haven demand emerges. That makes gold a later confirmation rather than the first warning signal.
What Would Break the Japan-to-Global-Market Thesis?
The thesis would weaken if USD/JPY stabilizes or rises, JGB yields stop climbing, and Japanese investors continue allocating capital overseas.
An orderly BOJ tightening cycle without broad deleveraging would also reduce the risk that Japan’s bond-market shift develops into a wider global liquidity event.
