Fed Hikes Rates for First Time Since 2023 as Bitcoin Surges

  • The Federal Reserve raised the federal funds rate by 25 basis points to a target range of 3.75% to 4.00% in a unanimous vote by all 12 FOMC members.
  • Bitcoin traded between $75,000 and $75,800 before touching $76,000 following the release, while the broader crypto market pulled back 2.18% on the day.
  • August’s Producer Price Index rose 5.4% year-over-year, while the Consumer Price Index stood at 3.4%.

The U.S. Federal Reserve raised borrowing costs this Wednesday, marking the first time the Fed raises rates since 2023. The decision set the benchmark interest rate within a range of 3.75% to 4.00%, prompting an immediate reaction in the price of Bitcoin.

The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) decision matched financial market expectations. CME FedWatch data indicated a 93% implied probability favoring this hike heading into the announcement.

The central bank’s move responded to a recent uptick across U.S. inflation metrics. The Department of Labor reported that the Producer Price Index (PPI) climbed 5.4% year-over-year in August, accelerating from 4.8% in July. Concurrently, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) posted a 0.4% monthly rise, with gasoline prices accounting for roughly one-third of that increase.

Inflationary pressures fueled by crude oil trading above $100 per barrel curtailed the central bank’s leeway to pause. Banking institutions including Barclays, Citigroup, and JPMorgan project cumulative policy tightening of 50 basis points before year-end.

The institutional backdrop places Fed Chair Kevin Warsh under heightened political scrutiny. Executive branch officials had called for rate cuts in the two weeks preceding the meeting.

Bitcoin Price Dynamics and Regulatory Friction

The digital asset market saw elevated volatility once the monetary policy verdict crossed the wire. Bitcoin was changing hands near $75,200 in the hours leading into the release before climbing briefly to $76,000.

Technical market data indicates that the leading cryptocurrency tested a key support band between $73,500 and $75,600. Industry analysts noted that a daily close below this threshold could expose downside targets toward $71,000 or even $66,900.

The run-up to the rate announcement was accompanied by legislative disruption in Washington. The U.S. Senate rejected the motion to proceed on the CLARITY Act in a 49–50 vote. The legislation aimed to establish clear jurisdictional lines between the SEC and the CFTC over digital asset markets.

Following the Senate vote, U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) logged net outflows of $450.4 million on Tuesday. That outflow marked the highest single-day institutional redemption volume recorded since June 24.

The Crypto Fear & Greed Index fell to 51 on Wednesday, entering neutral territory after touching extreme greed readings in recent weeks. The Federal Reserve’s official schedule sets its next monetary policy meeting for October 27–28, 2026.
