Goldman Sachs CEO Sees Tokenization as Wall Street's Next Act

Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon Sees Opportunity in Blockchain’s Challenge to Wall Street

Wall Street’s established trading machinery is facing a new technological challenge, and Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon isn’t sounding the alarm. During the investment bank’s third-quarter earnings call on Oct. 13, Solomon described tokenization as an important development across financial markets, outlining investments in blockchain infrastructure and tokenized assets.

The conversation began with a pointed question about whether things like DeFi, prediction markets and automated trading might chip away at Goldman’s lucrative markets business. Solomon’s response suggested the opposite possibility. These emerging technologies might ultimately bring the banking giant more products, more clients and considerably more business.

From DeFi Vaults to Prediction Markets, Goldman Faces a New Trading Era

Evercore ISI analyst Glenn Schorr raised the stakes by naming tokenization, agentic trading, defi vaults and prediction markets as potential challengers to Goldman’s trading operations. Solomon acknowledged the technological shift but pointed to electronic equities trading as an earlier example of disruption that Goldman successfully navigated.

“Today, tokenization is obviously an important trend. We see it across asset classes,” Solomon remarked during the call. The CEO argued that emerging market structures can introduce new products, attract clients and broaden distribution, effectively expanding the bank’s total addressable market.

His remarks did not announce a Goldman prediction market, DeFi vault or agentic trading product. Instead, they positioned these developments within a broader transformation of financial infrastructure that the bank intends to monitor and participate in.

Tokenized Bonds, Real Estate and Money Market Funds Already in Play

Goldman isn’t merely watching from the sidelines. Solomon pointed to years of investments in digital asset companies and market infrastructure, alongside its proprietary GS DAP platform, which provides blockchain-based infrastructure for financial assets. “We’ve tokenized bonds. We have a number of money market funds that are tokenized, real estate for certain clients,” Solomon explained.

The bank also participated in the July launch of the Depository Trust & Clearing Corp.’s (DTCC) tokenization service and is evaluating applications that can operate at greater scale. The attraction is straightforward. Tokenization can represent ownership of traditional assets digitally, potentially making transfers, recordkeeping and settlement more efficient.

Solomon expects the technology to reduce costs, automate processes and improve liquidity across asset classes. Still, he threw cold water on expectations of an immediate financial revolution, characterizing existing activity as small.

Goldman Sachs Backs Regulatory Clarity While Agencies Advance Rules

Regulation also figured prominently in Solomon’s assessment. He confirmed that Goldman publicly supported passage of the CLARITY legislation, despite reservations about its provisions. “We were publicly supportive of CLARITY passing. It wasn’t perfect, but we thought it would be good to give the market more clarity, no pun intended, and ensure investor protection,” he remarked.

Solomon added that regulatory agencies are already pursuing clearer market rules, with Goldman actively participating in those discussions. For a bank operating across traditional securities and emerging digital asset markets, regulatory certainty is central to determining which products can reach institutional clients.

A $6.4 Billion Equities Business Meets Blockchain Innovation

The discussion arrived against an impressive financial backdrop. Goldman reported $18.68 billion in quarterly net revenue, while equities revenue climbed 72% year over year to $6.4 billion. Equities financing revenue reached a record $3.37 billion, nearly doubling from a year earlier. Chief Financial Officer Denis Coleman also reported $12.7 billion in combined financing revenue across equities and fixed income, currencies and commodities for the first nine months.

Those figures illustrate the established business that blockchain-based competitors hope to challenge, and the financial resources Goldman can deploy in response. Solomon’s argument was that technological change doesn’t necessarily eliminate established intermediaries. It can create additional opportunities for institutions capable of adapting.

For now, the distinction is striking. Prediction markets and defi vaults entered the conversation as possible competitive threats, while tokenization emerged as an area of concrete investment and experimentation. Goldman has the infrastructure, the capital and the interest. What it hasn’t demonstrated is how much revenue these emerging markets will ultimately deliver in a world still dominated by TradFi systems.
