Aptos' AI Platform 'Shelby' Opens for Early Public Access

Shelby, a verifiable global object storage platform built for AI read workloads, has opened early access to the public. Co-developed by Aptos Labs and Jump Crypto and running on DoubleZero’s dedicated fiber network, the platform lets teams store data once and access it from any region through a single global namespace, with cryptographic proof attached to every read. Full production is expected later in 2026.

The early access phase runs on testnet, giving developers and AI teams the chance to integrate Shelby into real workloads before the full launch.

What Problem Is Shelby Solving?

The short version: traditional object storage was built for write-heavy workloads. AI flips that pattern completely.

A single user action in an AI-powered product can trigger dozens of background reads across multiple datasets and regions. The standard fix is replication: copy data closer to compute, add caching, manage consistency across copies, and pay to store everything three or four times. Each fix solves the last thing that broke while creating the next one.

Then there’s provenance. The moment licensed, proprietary, or user-consented data enters a model’s context, you need to prove what was served, when, and under what rights. Most teams handle this with a patched-together logging setup that holds until someone actually asks for proof.

Two compounding problems, and Shelby is built to address both at the architecture level rather than with workarounds.

How It Works

Shelby runs on DoubleZero’s dedicated fiber network with deterministic bandwidth and predictable routing. Write data once to a single address, read it from any region via the same path: no regional buckets, no replication, no post-facto routing stitched together. Egress costs are expected to run roughly 70% lower than traditional cloud providers.

Provenance is built into the read path itself. Every object served can return a cryptographic receipt: what was delivered, when, from where, and under what rights. Consent, attribution, and licensing terms travel with the object. That verifiable record is anchored on Aptos, creating an immutable on-chain proof. Enforcement happens at the storage layer, not in a compliance layer added afterward.

The real pitch isn’t cheaper storage. It’s access to data that most teams can’t currently use compliantly at scale. Organizations that can legally and verifiably use proprietary or consented data in their models build something their competitors can’t easily copy. The same architecture also serves streaming, DePIN, and token-gated content distribution, anywhere ownership and access rights need to travel with the data itself.
