Bitcoin Traders Face $75M in Liquidations After Three Failed Attempts to Clear $65,600

Rejections at $65,500 Resistance Drag Prices Lower

Bitcoin showed its volatility again on Monday, experiencing two sharp price swings even as tensions in the Middle East eased. After barely holding above $64,600 late Sunday, the cryptocurrency jumped to a session high of $65,500 as markets reacted to reports of a pause in fighting between U.S. and Iranian forces.

Despite pulling back to just over $65,000 shortly afterwards, bitcoin held ground through most of early Sunday morning. By 2:15 a.m. EDT, it reclaimed $65,500, only for an ensuing sell-off to push it under $65,000 nearly six hours later. A third attempt to break $65,500 failed, triggering a sharper drop to $64,336.

While the cryptocurrency reversed some losses, price action was generally flat, leaving its market capitalization at approximately $1.3 trillion. However, with just a few days remaining in July, bitcoin’s marginal rise left it closer to finishing the month with positive gains after starting it trading under $59,000.

Bitcoin’s whipsaw price action burned both overleveraged short and long traders. According to Coinglass data, nearly $45 million in short bets were liquidated over a 24-hour window, while roughly $30 million in leveraged long positions were wiped out during the same period.

While escalating U.S.-Iran hostilities and legislative movement on the CLARITY Act dictated market sentiment last week, a sudden cooling of geopolitical tensions triggered a sharp retreat in crude oil, providing immediate tailwinds for risk assets, including crypto. However, that upward trajectory quickly stalled. Weak inflows into spot bitcoin ETFs, coupled with persistent political infighting over the final text of the CLARITY Act, reignited regulatory headwinds and capped the rally.

Advocacy groups like the Crypto Council for Innovation (CCI) have pushed back against criticism that the legislation is weak on national security, highlighting that the bill represents the most comprehensive digital asset law enforcement effort to date by expanding AML/CFT rules. CCI also argues that the act establishes decentralized finance (DeFi) cybersecurity standards with NIST and provides FinCEN with $150 million for implementation.

Adding to the drag, Strategy notably opted not to expand its bitcoin balance sheet despite pulling in $544.5 million from a fresh MSTR share sale. The institutional heavyweight’s decision to sit on the sidelines removed a key buying catalyst, leaving bitcoin unable to anchor above the crucial $65,500 resistance level.
