Bank of America Warns of Tough August for Stocks: How Will Bitcoin Respond?

On July 27, 2026 by voice

Bank of America analysts recently warned that August could be a difficult month for US stocks, suggesting investors look at safer options like the US dollar and gold. They point to typical summer slowdowns and overall market conditions that might make people more cautious.

The big question now for crypto investors is whether Bitcoin will track the performance of a tech stock or function similarly to digital gold. The answer will likely depend on what’s causing the market to drop in the first place.

Risk-Off Environment (Short-Term Bearish for Bitcoin)

Looking back, when markets turn cautious due to things like interest rate hikes or global crises, Bitcoin has often followed the same path as other risky investments.

A big difference from previous cycles is the fact that institutional investors now hold a much larger share of Bitcoin through ETFs, hedge funds, companies, asset managers, and more. As such, when these investors are forced to cut back on risk, they often sell off a little bit of everything at the same time, including their crypto.

If August’s weakness comes from investors pulling back across the board, Bitcoin could take a hit alongside stocks. This has been seen before, such as during Fed rate hikes in 2022 or the global carry trade unwind in August 2024. In each case, Bitcoin fell at first but eventually bounced back.

Confidence in Fiat Weakens

On the other hand, if stocks fall because of worries about government debt, less confidence in fiat currencies, expectations of more central bank stimulus, or new liquidity injections, Bitcoin can act more like a safe-haven asset.

Over the last few years, big investors have started calling Bitcoin digital gold more frequently. When that mindset takes hold, capital tends to move into scarce assets like gold, Bitcoin, and sometimes even US Treasuries.

Regardless of the scenario, one thing is certain: Bitcoin is less dependent on retail traders than before, as more companies are adding Bitcoin to their corporate cash reserves. Coinglass data shows that publicly traded companies hold roughly 1.25 million $BTC, which represents slightly more than 6% of total supply.

Additionally, ETF providers are now holding hundreds of thousands of $BTC on behalf of their investors, with BlackRock (IBIT) leading at approximately 735,800 Bitcoin.
