US Leads Bitcoin Adoption as Bank of America Deepens Crypto Push

Bank of America’s decision to reorganize leadership around digital assets isn’t happening in isolation. Instead, it reflects a broader trend across the United States, where the country has quietly built a commanding lead in nearly every measure of Bitcoin adoption.

A Bank Moves Deeper Into Crypto

Internal memos reported by Reuters on July 17 revealed that Bank of America has expanded several leadership roles tied to digital assets and AI across its Global Markets division. Sonali Theisen now oversees Bank of America’s brand new digital assets platform, adding that role on top of her existing position as global head of FICC electronic trading.

America’s Broader Bitcoin Lead

That single bank’s move sits inside a country that already leads the world across nearly every Bitcoin metric. Americans hold an estimated 42% of all bitcoin in circulation, per River’s data, a figure that stands out even against America’s already outsized share of global wealth and GDP. Roughly 49.6 million American adults, or about 18.6% of the adult population, now own bitcoin, more than the 28.8 million Americans who own gold.

Mining tells a similar story. The US runs 37.5% of Bitcoin’s global hashrate, more than the next five nations combined, supported by more than 150 Bitcoin companies headquartered domestically and over 50 mining sites each drawing more than 10 megawatts of power.

Many of these operations buy surplus electricity that would otherwise go unused and can power down within seconds during grid strain, giving them a secondary role in balancing the country’s electrical infrastructure.

Corporations and Government Are Buying In Too

US public companies hold 1.24 million $BTC, or 92.7% of all bitcoin held by public companies worldwide. US public companies added 510,000 $BTC in the past 12 months, per available data, a pace more than three times faster than the total supply of bitcoin mined over that same period.

Government behavior mirrors the corporate trend. The US government currently holds 328,372 $BTC, nearly three times as much as every other government on Earth combined, and according to the think tank Stand with Crypto, a majority of politicians across both parties in Washington now hold pro-Bitcoin positions.

Seen against that backdrop, Bank of America’s leadership reshuffle looks less like an isolated corporate decision and more like one bank catching up to a trend already well underway across the rest of the country.
