Why Africa Is Quietly Becoming the Next Global Capital of Crypto

Africa could very well become one of, if not the most important, crypto growth markets. The reason is not due to speculative activity, but because crypto actually solves real problems on the continent. With mobile payments taking off, lots of people without bank accounts, high cross-border transfer fees, and unstable local currencies, cryptocurrencies (especially stablecoins) are proving genuinely useful.

For instance, according to Chainalysis, between July 2024 and June 2025, Sub-Saharan Africa received more than $205 billion in on-chain value, representing 52% year-over-year growth. This makes it the third-fastest-growing crypto region globally.

Unlike a lot of more developed markets, Africa’s crypto growth comes mainly from everyday people. In the above time span, more than 8% of all value moved was in transactions under $10,000, compared to about 6% globally. This suggests people are using crypto for daily needs and not just for institutional trading.

Africa Leads Mobile Payments

One of Africa’s biggest strengths is mobile payments. In previous years, the continent accounted for about 70% of the global mobile money transaction market, which was estimated at around $1 trillion. Separately, Market Data Forecast estimates the African mobile money industry was worth about $951 million in 2025 and projects it will grow to $1.126 billion in 2026.

Additionally, in Sub-Saharan Africa, around 40% of adults now have a mobile money account, up from 27% in 2021. For many users, mobile money is their main way of handling finances, so moving to blockchain-based payments feels much more natural than in regions still dependent on traditional banking.

Stablecoins Dominate

Stablecoins are also becoming increasingly important. A lot of Africans use dollar-backed stablecoins to protect their savings from inflation or to send money home more easily.

Countries including Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, and South Africa are seeing more people turn to USDT and USDC. These stablecoins offer faster and cheaper transfers than regular banks, while also shielding users from unpredictable swings in their local currencies.

For example, a study from earlier this year showed that almost 80% of people surveyed in Nigeria and South Africa already own stablecoins, and over 75% of them plan to buy even more in the year ahead.

Additionally, crypto regulation is improving in several countries in Africa. South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, and Mauritius have all adopted organized frameworks with balanced rules that protect consumers while still letting fintech innovation thrive.
