Watch Out for Tomorrow: The Bank of Japan Is Set to Announce Its Interest Rate Decision—What Will Be the Impact on Bitcoin?

A day before the Bank of Japan (BoJ) announces its interest rate decision, the Japanese yen gained nearly 3% against the dollar. The sharp movement in the currency market fueled speculation that the Japanese government may have intervened again to support the yen.

The USD/JPY pair fell by over 400 points during the day, dropping to 158.5. The daily loss approached 3%, marking the sharpest decline since Japanese authorities’ currency intervention earlier in the year.

Market participants believe that the rapid and strong appreciation of the yen may be due to direct foreign currency sales by Japanese authorities. However, the Japanese Ministry of Finance has not yet made an official statement regarding a possible intervention.

The Japanese yen had previously fallen to its lowest levels against the dollar in nearly 40 years. To limit the rise in the exchange rate, the Japanese government intervened in the foreign exchange market between April 28 and May 27, injecting a total of 11.73 trillion yen, or approximately $73.2 billion.

These operations aimed to prevent the USD/JPY pair from sustainably rising above the 160 level, but the yen subsequently came under renewed selling pressure.

Data on foreign exchange reserves released by Japan’s Ministry of Finance suggested that the funds needed for previous interventions may have been raised by selling a portion of the country’s foreign securities assets, including US Treasury bonds.

Investors are now focused on the Bank of Japan’s interest rate decision and the messages it will deliver regarding the future of monetary policy. Possible hawkish signals from the BoJ are seen as potentially increasing pressure on the yen to appreciate.

The sharp appreciation of the yen could create short-term selling pressure on Bitcoin by increasing the risk of unwinding carry trade positions—where investors borrow in Japanese yen at low cost to invest in Bitcoin and other risky assets—and this pressure could intensify if the Bank of Japan delivers a hawkish message or raises interest rates.
