'This Will Only Get Worse': Famous Bitcoin Critic Warns of AI and Quantum Danger for BTC

On August 3, 2026 by voice

Peter Schiff warns that Bitcoin hacking will become easier due to AI and quantum computing. Peter Schiff, a critic of Bitcoin, has renewed his long-standing criticism of the cryptocurrency industry by taking advantage of one of the biggest hardware wallet security incidents in recent years.

Coldcard hack shakes up the market

In the wake of the Coldcard wallet hack that depleted up to $89 million in Bitcoin from over 1,200 addresses, Schiff contended that as artificial intelligence and quantum computing develop further, the security risks that Bitcoin holders face will only rise. Schiff wrote, “This will only get worse as AI and quantum computing make hacking even easier,” implying that advancements in technology will increasingly favor hackers over regular investors.

The remarks follow the discovery by researchers that a flaw in Coldcard’s firmware was responsible for a large-scale, coordinated theft. According to reports, the vulnerability affected the wallet’s random seed generation process, giving attackers the ability to reconstruct wallet seeds and methodically drain affected addresses. As more compromised wallets have been found, the initial estimates of the losses, which were close to $70 million, have since increased to about $89 million.

Cold storage isn’t paramount

Coldcard has long been considered one of the most security-focused Bitcoin hardware wallets, especially among seasoned proponents of self-custody, which makes the incident somewhat shocking. The attack focused on the wallet’s use of randomness during seed generation rather than on Bitcoin’s blockchain or cryptography itself, demonstrating that even specialized security devices are susceptible to software engineering errors.

Although Schiff presented the exploit as proof that AI and quantum computing will facilitate attacks in the future, neither technology was the cause of this incident. It was caused by a firmware flaw rather than improvements in processing power. His more comprehensive argument, however, reflects a continuing discussion about potential security issues in the cryptocurrency sector.

However, the majority of cryptographers emphasize that there are currently no viable quantum computers capable of cracking Bitcoin’s cryptography, giving the network time to prepare through upcoming protocol improvements. The Coldcard incident reminds Bitcoin users that self-custody security relies on much more than just the blockchain.

Potential points of failure include operational security, device manufacturing, seed generation, and wallet firmware. As the most recent exploit shows, vulnerabilities in the surrounding infrastructure can still expose users to significant losses even if Bitcoin’s underlying protocol is not compromised.
