Saylor Calls Strategy the "JPMorgan of Crypto"

On August 4, 2026 by voice

A Bold Comparison, Days After a Warning

Saylor’s post landed as a short, declarative line stating that “Strategy is the JPMorgan” of the crypto economy. No thread, no chart, no elaboration, just the kind of one-line framing Saylor has used for years to position his company as more than a corporate bitcoin buyer.

JPMorgan spent much of early July warning that Strategy’s revamped bitcoin sales policy introduces what the bank called two-way risk to crypto markets, meaning one of bitcoin’s largest and most reliable buyers could, for the first time in years, also become a seller with enough size to move price.

JPMorgan argued Strategy should hold cash reserves covering 24 to 36 months of preferred-dividend obligations, well above the roughly 17-month buffer the company carried at the time, and estimated the crypto market’s trajectory into late 2026 now partly hinges on how Strategy manages its bitcoin treasury alongside the fate of the CLARITY Act in the Senate.

Saylor has publicly disputed the idea that Strategy is under pressure to sell, rejecting a separate report that the company had approved a new $5 billion bitcoin sale plan and describing its capital-management framework as an existing tool the market misread as a forced-selling signal.

The Scale Behind the Claim

Strategy’s underlying numbers support at least the scale argument, given the company holds 842,138 $BTC as of August 2, after completing its third bitcoin sale of the year, a transaction that trimmed the position by 1,638 $BTC while Saylor simultaneously raised Strategy’s U.S. dollar reserve to $4 billion and repurchased $81 million of its STRC preferred stock.

That combination is the exact behavior JPMorgan flagged as introducing volatility, since it shows Strategy actively managing multiple balance-sheet levers rather than simply accumulating bitcoin in one direction.

Zoomed out, JPMorgan’s own analysts estimate Strategy has bought roughly $13.7 billion worth of bitcoin so far this year, close to 70 percent of the bank’s estimate for total net digital asset inflows industrywide, and now hold near 4 percent of bitcoin’s entire circulating supply.

Based on Strategy’s pace through the first half of the year, the same analysts projected the company could buy around $32 billion in bitcoin over all of 2026, up sharply from roughly $22 billion in both 2024 and 2025. That is the kind of market share a bank the size of JPMorgan would recognize instantly, and it is likely the comparison Saylor is drawing (not balance sheet size in dollar terms, but the degree to which one institution’s trading behavior can move an entire asset class).

What’s Next for Strategy’s Bitcoin Machine

The company’s second-quarter 2026 results have seen the company swing from a $14 billion profit to an $8.2 billion loss even as its bitcoin holdings grew. Saylor has said Strategy expects to remain a net bitcoin buyer over time and has separately stressed he has never personally sold a single satoshi of his own holdings, distinguishing his personal position from the corporate treasury’s occasional sales.
