The Purge Wave in the Cryptocurrency Sector is Accelerating, More Than 100 Crypto Projects Shut Down in 2026!

Market fluctuations and tightening funding conditions in the cryptocurrency sector in 2026 led to the closure of numerous projects. More than 100 crypto projects have shut down since the beginning of the year, with some companies filing for bankruptcy or permanently ceasing operations.

It is noted that this wave of liquidations is not limited to a specific area. Among the projects that have closed or gone bankrupt are cryptocurrency exchanges, wallet providers, decentralized finance (DeFi) lending protocols, NFT marketplaces, and Layer 1 blockchains. Data indicates that exits from the sector have accelerated recently.

The current process is similar to the sector consolidation that followed the bursting of the internet bubble. The sharp value losses seen particularly in the altcoin market are significantly weakening the financial resilience of projects. The report notes that some altcoins have recently seen their value decline by 70% to 90%, and consequently, the project treasuries held in tokens have shrunk considerably.

Another significant problem for crypto projects has been the increasing difficulty in accessing funding. Increased selectivity among investors and a decrease in new capital inflows are making it harder for projects that cannot establish a sufficient revenue model to continue operating.

In addition, the rising cost of cyberattacks is increasing pressure on the industry. Losses due to security vulnerabilities can have serious consequences, especially for small projects with limited financial resources.

According to experts, current conditions are accelerating the elimination of projects that lack a real user base, a sustainable revenue model, and a strong product infrastructure. Conversely, projects that are financially more robust and can develop real use cases are expected to gain a stronger position after sector consolidation.

Developments in 2026 indicate that the crypto sector has transitioned from a period of rapid growth to a more selective and competitive phase. Analysts believe that project closures and mergers may continue before market conditions improve.
