Cardano Foundation and CEMS Launch Study on Blockchain Sustainability

On August 21, 2026 by voice

  • Regulation landscape: Europe and India show the strongest sustainability compliance pressure, shaping the study’s focus.
  • Blockchain scoring: Cardano ranked second in a multi‑metric assessment, with strengths in cost efficiency and decentralization.
  • Enterprise pilot: A 12‑month roadmap for H&M showed a potential ROI of 118%, demonstrating practical blockchain value.

The Cardano Foundation has completed a three‑month research collaboration with CEMS and SGH Warsaw School of Economics, producing a detailed examination of how public blockchain networks can support global sustainability compliance. The project focused on regulatory pressure, technical capabilities, and practical business applications, offering leaders a clearer view of how blockchain can streamline reporting obligations in an increasingly regulated environment. Throughout the study, Cardano served as a central reference point for evaluating network suitability and real‑world use cases.

Global Sustainability Regulation Under Review

The student team began by mapping out the global regulatory landscape, identifying regions where compliance demands are accelerating. India and Europe stood out for their extensive frameworks, with Europe already enforcing mandatory disclosure rules for more than 50,000 enterprises.

The study highlighted how regulatory pressure is already visible in practice. Palmyra, an ecosystem partner, uses Cardano to help commodity producers meet traceability requirements under the EU Deforestation Regulation. This early adoption reinforced the relevance of blockchain for sustainability reporting and positioned Europe as the project’s primary focus area.

Matrix Scorecard and Network Assessment

A weighted matrix scorecard was developed to evaluate public permissionless blockchains across 14 metrics grouped into business, sustainability, architecture, and strategy categories. These metrics included carbon intensity per transaction, dollar secured, e‑waste, profitability, validator concentration, and block space utilization.

Using this matrix, the team generated weighted scores for Solana, Ethereum, Cardano, Tezos, and Hedera. Cardano ranked second behind Ethereum, with recommendations centered on improving fee‑based monetization, energy efficiency, and scalability. The study also emphasized Cardano’s strengths, including structural soundness, cost efficiency, simple hardware requirements, decentralization, and low technical risk.

Pilot Roadmap and Practical ROI

The final milestone delivered a fully specified 12‑month pilot roadmap for a global enterprise, targeting H&M’s sustainability goals. The team outlined an end‑to‑end tracking and reporting use case on a per‑item basis, supported by technical, regulatory, and commercial success criteria.

Profitability modeling suggested a potential ROI of nearly 118% within the first year. The findings were presented to the Cardano Foundation, SGH, and CEMS participants, earning praise for their clarity, rigor, and practical value. The project adds to growing applied work in the field, including Plastiks’ use of Cardano for audit‑ready plastic recovery records.
