Veteran Trader Peter Brandt Questions Binance Over Bitcoin Price Anomaly

On August 25, 2026 by voice

Renowned technical analyst and Factor LLC CEO Peter Brandt has publicly challenged the reliability of Binance’s trading infrastructure. The industry veteran’s criticism was prompted by a deep, isolated anomaly in Bitcoin’s price.

During trading on Saturday, Aug. 22, a localized price dislocation triggered a cascade of forced liquidations and knocked out retail clients’ protective orders, while trading on competing platforms continued as usual.

The market drawdown on Binance instantly escalated into a localized flash crash. On the one-hour BTC/USD chart, an extreme downward wick formed as the price plunged to $72,500 within seconds, while the broader market remained near $79,000.

A comparison with charts from the U.S.-based Coinbase exchange confirms the anomalous nature of the move. During the same hour, Bitcoin’s lowest price on Coinbase remained at $75,800, producing a $3,300 interexchange spread. This artificial price discrepancy was enough to completely wipe out the margin collateral of open positions and trigger stop-loss orders exclusively for Binance clients.

Commenting on the incident on social media, Peter Brandt called it another Binance “boondoggle” that caused ordinary retail traders to get “stopped out” far below the actual market lows.

According to the analyst, the platform had once again found a way “to push its customers over the cliff.” Brandt emphasized that the exchange already has a “history of historically gruesome stop-outs,” recalling a similarly severe incident on Oct. 10, 2025.

Bitcoin domino effect

Behind the visual movement on the chart lies the mechanics of the fragmented cryptocurrency market, where liquidity is divided among independent private companies. When, for example, a large market sell order hits Binance, an instant vacuum emerges in the exchange’s local order book: there are simply not enough buyers at the current prices at that exact moment.

An automatic domino effect then begins. The initial price decline forces the exchange’s algorithms to liquidate traders’ leveraged positions. Each forced liquidation instantly releases new sell orders into the market, creating a snowball effect that drags the price down toward $72,500.

The incident clearly demonstrates that tying protective orders to the local “Last Price” carries critical risks during periods of insufficient liquidity. The only reliable protection against isolated market wicks remains the use of a weighted, market-wide Mark Price.
