Bessent Delivers Bitcoin's Best Ad, Scaramucci Claims

On September 3, 2026 by voice

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s warning that the world is “awash in debt” has been seized on by Anthony Scaramucci as an inadvertent advertisement for Bitcoin.

“Bessent stood in front of the G20 and said the world is awash in debt. Bitcoin’s entire pitch is that sentence,” Scaramucci, founder of SkyBridge Capital and a longtime Bitcoin advocate, wrote on X on Sept. 3. “Twenty finance ministers just delivered the best Bitcoin ad of the year and none of them meant to.”

Scaramucci’s argument comes after Bessent made mounting sovereign debt a central theme of discussions at the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting in Asheville, North Carolina, held Aug. 31 and Sept. 1.

Bessent’s comments were not intended as an endorsement of $BTC. Instead, the Treasury secretary was arguing that stronger economic growth is essential to dealing with the enormous debt burdens accumulated by governments around the world.

Earlier today, $BTC reached an intraday high of $81,332, CoinGecko data shows.

Bessent’s warning about global debt

During his appearance at the G20 meeting, Bessent said the world had accumulated substantial debt following the 2008 financial crisis. He argued that economic growth could provide a path out of the problem.

“The world is awash in debt,” Bessent said, according to the Washington Examiner. He argued that the United States and other economies need to grow their way through the debt burden instead of relying on spending cuts or other contractionary measures.

G20 officials were meeting against a backdrop of rising government borrowing costs, aging populations and weak productivity growth. Axios reported that the central challenge facing the world’s major economies was finding enough growth to manage mounting debt and other structural pressures.

The G20 chair statement separately said the group remained committed to addressing challenges surrounding debt sustainability.

Bitcoin proponents have long argued that excessive government borrowing and persistent fiscal deficits can ultimately undermine the purchasing power of traditional currencies.

A senior U.S. Treasury officials standing before the world’s leading finance ministers and acknowledging the scale of global indebtedness reinforces the problem that Bitcoin was designed to address, according to Scaramucci.
