Keep a Close Eye on Wednesday: There Are Reports of a Vote That Will Determine Bitcoin’s Fate in the U.S

A bill proposing the establishment of a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve within the US federal government may be put to a vote in the House Financial Services Committee on Wednesday, according to reports.

Bill H.R. 8957, titled the “American Reserve Modernization Act of 2026,” was introduced to the House of Representatives on May 21, 2026, and referred to the Financial Services Committee. Sponsors of the bill include Alaska Representative Nick Begich, as well as numerous Republican and some Democratic members from various states.

The bill proposes establishing a separate “Strategic Bitcoin Reserve” within the U.S. Treasury Department to store Bitcoins held by the federal government. If the law passes, the Treasury Secretary will have 180 days to create a secure Bitcoin storage infrastructure.

In addition, a separate “Digital Asset Stock” is planned for crypto assets other than Bitcoin. It is envisioned that all eligible Bitcoins acquired by the federal government will be transferred to the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, while other digital assets will be transferred to this separate stock structure.

According to the bill, the Treasury Department will have the authority to sell, exchange, or convert digital assets other than Bitcoin into other assets. The proceeds from these transactions will only be permitted to be used to increase the amount of Bitcoin in the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve or to reduce the U.S. national debt.

The text highlights Bitcoin’s limited supply, decentralized nature, and recent global adoption, arguing that Bitcoin is a digital-age asset that, similar to gold, could diversify the U.S. national reserves. Lawmakers suggest that a Bitcoin reserve could strengthen the U.S. dollar’s position in the global financial system and enhance the country’s financial resilience.

The management and supervision of reserves will be the responsibility of the Treasury Department. Additionally, coordination with the Department of Defense, the Department of Homeland Security, and industry experts is planned regarding physical and cybersecurity.

The bill also states that the transactions to be carried out should be transparent and auditable, and envisages the creation of a “reserve proof” system that will allow public verification of reserve assets.

According to the latest reports, H.R. 8957 is expected to proceed to a committee vote on Wednesday. If the bill passes the committee, it will be moved to the House of Representatives General Assembly.
