Saifedean Ammous Says Bitcoin Already Functions as a Medium of Exchange

On October 14, 2026 by voice

  • Saifedean Ammous argues that holding Bitcoin already counts as monetary use, even if $BTC is not yet widely used for everyday retail payments.
  • He expects Bitcoin’s volatility to decline as its market grows and predicts it could eventually surpass gold in total market capitalization.
  • Ammous rejects the idea that fixed supply prevents Bitcoin from functioning as money, while critics argue volatility and payment adoption still constrain its medium-of-exchange role today.

Saifedean Ammous, author of The Bitcoin Standard, argues that Bitcoin already functions as money even without widespread use for everyday payments. In an October 13 post, Ammous said holding Bitcoin itself constitutes monetary use and rejected the idea that limited payment adoption disproves its monetization. His argument separates money’s store-of-value role from the narrower question of how frequently Bitcoin is spent at merchants. Ammous expects $BTC to become less volatile as its market grows, eventually surpassing gold in capitalization while becoming more practical as a medium of exchange.

Ammous Says Bitcoin’s Monetary Role Extends Beyond Payments

Ammous was responding to economist Lawrence H. White’s argument that Bitcoin’s fixed supply contributes to price volatility, limiting its usefulness for routine exchange. Ammous disputes that interpretation, arguing that demand-driven monetization can enlarge Bitcoin’s market sufficiently for volatility to decline over time. The disagreement centers on whether fixed supply is fundamentally incompatible with monetary stability or whether a larger, deeper market can absorb demand shocks more effectively. That debate echoes the wider comparison between Bitcoin and gold, where volatility remains a central distinction between the two assets despite their shared scarcity narratives.

Ammous also rejects the assumption that money must first be widely used for retail payments before it can become monetized. In his framework, people choosing to hold Bitcoin as savings are already using it for a monetary purpose, while payment adoption can develop later as volatility falls and liquidity deepens. That view treats store of value and medium of exchange as stages that can overlap rather than functions that must mature simultaneously. It contrasts with arguments that Bitcoin payment adoption remains too limited to support claims of broad everyday monetary use, especially when speculation and institutional activity still dominate transaction demand.

The claim remains a forecast about Bitcoin’s monetary evolution rather than a demonstrated endpoint. Ammous expects Bitcoin to become larger than gold and less volatile, but neither outcome is guaranteed, and limited merchant usage remains a measurable constraint on its medium-of-exchange role today. The practical question is whether growing market depth can reduce volatility enough for Bitcoin’s payment function to expand without undermining its appeal as long-term savings. That tension is already visible as Bitcoin payment infrastructure expands while many holders continue treating $BTC primarily as a reserve asset today. Ammous sees those roles as complementary rather than contradictory.
