Ripple's Korean Expansion Reaches From Remittances to Government Bonds

On October 15, 2026 by voice

Four Korean Deals Take Ripple Beyond Cross-Border Payments

Cross-border payments and government bond settlement anchor Ripple’s growing Korean institutional network, which now extends into the securities industry. The blockchain infrastructure provider outlined that expansion when it announced its Oct. 14 custody and tokenization partnership with Meritz Securities, identifying the South Korean securities firm as its fourth Korean institutional partner this year and its first in the brokerage industry.

The agreement places Meritz alongside life insurer Kyobo Life Insurance, internet-only bank Kbank, and regional lender Jeonbuk Bank, whose projects address different financial operations. Ripple and Meritz’s collaboration centers on Ripple Custody and tools for representing financial assets on blockchain networks. The platform provides secure storage, transfer, and settlement, giving Meritz an existing system to evaluate.

Fiona Murray, managing director for Asia Pacific at Ripple, described the company’s broader offering as spanning payments, custody, and tokenization. She cited more than 85 licenses and a network covering more than 60 markets globally, placing the Korean agreements within Ripple’s international operations.

Byungha Kang, managing director of the Strategic Planning Unit at Meritz Securities, laid out the partnership’s intended direction:

“This partnership lays the foundation for combining Ripple’s global digital asset infrastructure with our capital markets capabilities. As Korea’s regulatory framework evolves, we will prepare safe and trusted digital asset financial services in stages.”

From Business Remittances to Tokenized Government Bonds

Jeonbuk Bank’s adoption of Ripple Payments connects the broader institutional strategy to businesses sending money across national borders. Its cross-border remittance partnership, announced Aug. 18, made it Korea’s first regional bank to deploy the platform. Ripple describes settlement in seconds to minutes, operating around the clock, for businesses including import-export companies, technology startups, and online content creators.

Kyobo Life Insurance’s government bond settlement initiative uses Ripple Custody to explore blockchain-based processing of government debt. The insurer and Ripple are exploring the technical and regulatory feasibility of holding, transferring, and settling tokenized government bonds. The initiative aims to replace manual processing with on-chain execution and enable near-real-time settlement.

Kbank is deploying institutional digital asset wallets to manage holdings across blockchain networks within a regulated bank. Korea’s first internet-only bank will use Ripple Custody for wallet creation, transaction authorization, and asset management. Built-in security controls reduce the need to construct and maintain a proprietary system.

Meritz Maps a Phased Route Into Digital Asset Finance

Meritz’s exploration of digital asset businesses encompasses spot exchange-traded funds, fractional investments, security tokens, trading platforms, and won-denominated stablecoins. The companies will begin within Meritz’s existing securities operations and current regulations, then broaden their cooperation as Korea’s framework develops.

Those potential services depend on the ability to hold digital assets securely and represent financial rights on a blockchain. Blockchain tokens can represent ownership or other rights associated with an underlying asset. Tokenization creates those digital representations; custody provides the controls for storing and transferring them.

South Korea’s Financial Services Commission, the country’s financial regulator, proposed rules for tokenized securities issuance and circulation on Oct. 1, covering stocks, bonds, funds, and fractional investment securities. The proposals would implement changes under revised securities and electronic registration laws taking effect Feb. 4, 2027. Public comments remain open through Nov. 11, before the proposals proceed through the approval process.
