Bitcoin Trails Its Typical October Path by Nearly 10 Percentage Points as Mid-Month Weakness Takes Hold

On October 16, 2026 by voice

Bitcoin trails its historical October pace at mid-month, with $BTC below its Oct. 1 open as $80.4K support and past late-month recoveries come into focus.

Bitcoin entered October with an early advance, but the move has reversed sharply enough to leave $BTC behind its typical mid-month performance.

CryptoQuant’s comparison shows Bitcoin sitting 3.2% below its Oct. 1 opening price by Oct. 15, while the same point in previous Octobers has historically produced an average gain of 6.7%.

Bitcoin opened October at $83,576 and initially pushed higher during the first week. The chart shows $BTC gaining roughly 2% to 3% by Oct. 7 before the direction changed.

By Oct. 10, the month had slipped into negative territory, with the drawdown extending through Oct. 13 and Oct. 15.

The Oct. 15 snapshot placed Bitcoin at approximately $80,867, or 3.2% below the monthly opening price.

$BTC has since recovered toward $82,100 on Oct. 16, reducing the month-to-date deficit to roughly 1.8%, but it remains below the Oct. 1 starting point.

Bitcoin Is About 10 Percentage Points Behind Its Typical October Path

The gap with history is substantial.

Across the completed Octobers from 2013 through 2025, Bitcoin had gained an average 6.7% by the Oct. 15 open, while the median increase stood at 3.8%.

Against the chart’s 2026 reading of -3.2%, this year was running roughly 10 percentage points behind the historical average path at mid-month.

Looking at the full month, October has historically been favorable to Bitcoin more often than not. Bitcoin finished higher in 10 of the 13 Octobers from 2013 through 2025, with an average full-month return of approximately 19.1%. The outcomes varied widely, however, from a 53.8% gain in 2013 to an 11.6% loss in 2014.

That wide range is why the historical average should not be treated as a target for 2026.

2022 Currently Offers the Closest Historical Path

Among the individual years shown, 2022 most closely resembles Bitcoin’s 2026 trajectory through mid-October.

Bitcoin rallied early that month, peaked around Oct. 5, turned negative near Oct. 8 and then spent much of the next two weeks moving sideways.

The difference came late in the month: $BTC recovered after Oct. 25 and ultimately reached the Oct. 31 open about 5.9% above its Oct. 1 level.

The chart also illustrates two very different alternatives.

In 2023, Bitcoin had gained only around 5% by Oct. 19 before accelerating sharply in the second half. By the Oct. 31 open, it stood 27.9% above the Oct. 1 open.

The opposite occurred in 2018. Bitcoin remained weak through the second half and ended October approximately 4.7% lower.

Those paths show why mid-month weakness alone does not decide how October finishes.

$80.4K Becomes the Immediate Bitcoin Test

The current price structure adds another layer to the seasonal comparison.

CryptoQuant identifies approximately $80,400 as nearby trendline support after Bitcoin broke below a rising four-hour wedge on Oct. 7.

The Oct. 15 decline brought $BTC close to that area before the subsequent recovery above $82,000.

Holding $80.4K would leave room for Bitcoin to recover toward the broken wedge support, which now acts as short-term resistance.

A confirmed four-hour break beneath it would instead shift attention toward lower consolidation areas around $77,000 and $73,500, followed by deeper levels at $70,000 and $64,000.

For October itself, the more immediate comparison is clear: Bitcoin is running behind both its historical average and median performance at mid-month.

The second half will determine whether 2026 begins to resemble 2022’s late recovery, 2023’s acceleration, or 2018’s weaker finish.
